GEC History

The General Electric Company was one of Britain's foremost engineering companies manufacturing a vast range of products and services both within the UK and worldwide. GEC's origins date back to the 1880s and following a major re-organisation in 1996 with the creation of GEC Alsthom, GEC's demise finally came in 1999 when it was renamed Marconi. Marconi concentrated its business interests on the emerging dot.com bubble and by focusing on such a relatively narrow market it was a risk too far. The dot.com bubble burst, Marconi was split up and the fragments purchased by Ericsson and a new company, Telent.
